For political hopefuls in Allen, it's time to run.
The filing period for candidates in this year's Allen ISD Board of Trustees election begins Wednesday and continues until March 1. Place 5, currently held by Board President Gary Stocker, and Place 4, held by Lois Lindsey will be on the ballot
Stocker said he will run for a fourth term on the board, while Lindsey said she will not run again. She is in the midst of her second board term.
To run for office, a person must be a United States citizen who is at least 18 years old and has never been convicted of a felony or determined to be mentally incapacitated. They must also have lived in Texas for at least one year and in the school district for at least six moths prior to filing.
School board members serve three-year terms. Stocker was elected to his current term in a contested race in May 2010. He received 73 percent of the vote to defeat challenger Paul Sundar-Singh. Lindsey ran uncontested in that election.
Before the filing period is over, Allen ISD will hold a free program to help candidates learn about being a school board member. The district's School Board Academy will take place Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Allen ISD Administration Building at 612 E. Bethany Dr.
According to the district's website, the program is conducted by current school board members and district administrators and is designed to teach candidates about the election process and how the school district and school board operates.
Anyone interested in taking part must register by Monday, Feb. 18. For information on how to register, visit allenisd.org.
